For the last few years, we've been investigating the idea that the universe might have been around for billions of years longer than we thought it was. And we've been wondering whether we were right. In 2017, three teams of researchers took another look at the constraints that scientists had been using to calculate how old the universe is. They considered changing our best estimates of how long the universe has been expanding since it came into being, and found that these new numbers were consistent with what they expected to see. The teams included physicists at the University of California, Los Angeles, at the University of Michigan, at the Australian National University and at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The results are published today in Nature. “This is the first time anyone has tried to use the expansion rate of the universe to put a lower bound on the age of the universe,” says co-author Christof Wetterich, a theoretical physicist at the Australian National University. “And what we get is a very stringent upper bound on the age of the universe.” The universe is expanding, and we know that because it takes light from distant stars and galaxies to reach us. At some point in the distant past, the universe stopped expanding and started to contract. It is now essentially at a standstill. For that to happen, the universe must be very old. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, was the first instrument to show that the universe is getting bigger. But the telescope can’t measure the rate at which it’s expanding. For this, you need to look at how fast the distance between galaxies grows. What has been happening in the last decade is that cosmologists have been using a “Hubble-like” method to infer the age of the universe. This method requires a number of assumptions and simplifications, however, and some researchers have been asking whether there’s a more reliable way to figure out when the universe came into being.
